DAC 2012 Annual Membership Meeting

 South Florida – Miami Dade’s premier arts advocacy organization, Diaspora Arts Coalition is proud to announce their 13th Annual Membership meeting.  The Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Joseph Caleb Auditorium, 5400 NW 22nd Avenue in Miami.  The meeting will begin at 9:15 a.m. with a welcome breakfast; the Annual Membership Meeting and Arts Business Workshop will follow. 
The election of officers will take place and the event will conclude with a Luncheon boasting superb culinary art and the very best in entertainment.

City of Miami Celebrates Arbor Day by
Planting Trees in Model City
-Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones Host Green Miami Campaign-

(Miami, FL   April 26, 2012)  — In honor of National Arbor Day, Mayor Tomas Regalado and District 5 Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones will kick-off the celebration with a tree planting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on April 27th, 2012. MIAMI GARDENS, FL ] – The Honorable Jennifer Carroll, trailblazing stateswoman and Florida’s first black lieutenant governor, will be celebrated for her groundbreaking achievements at a reception welcoming President Henry Lewis, III, to Florida Memorial University (FMU).  The event will be held Saturday, April 9, 2011, at 6 p.m. in the Smith Conference Center on FMU’s campus: 15800 N.W. 42nd Avenue, Miami Gardens, FL 33054.  The cost is $50.00 per person and attendees must RSVP via email at jredd@fmuniv.edu by Wednesday, April 6.

Ambassador Marks Pays 4-Day
Official Visit to South Florida

  

     Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Audrey P. Marks will pay her first official visit to Florida beginning Saturday (April 9) through Wednesday (April 13). Ms. Marks begins her visit as guest of the seventh annual American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) gala to be held on Saturday (Apr. 9) at the Jungle Island in Miami. This year, international reggae artiste and philanthropist, Orville “Shaggy” Burrell will be honoured by the AFJ, for his efforts in enhancing health care for children in Jamaica.

                The Consulate General of Jamaica in conjunction with several community associations and civic officials has organized a schedule of representative activities as Ambassador Marks interacts with the Jamaican Diaspora community and civic officials in South Florida and Orlando.

Jordan will be hosting District 1's first Eco-Fair.  Residents are encouraged to learn how to save energy, money and the planet with help from Miami-Dade County, Home Depot, Florida Power & Light, South Florida Water Management District, and The Big Blue Foundation.  This free event will take place on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Home Depot located at 5500 NW 167th Street in the parking lot, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The journalism industry has been hit hard by the economy. Newspapers, magazines, broadcast stations, photographers, designers, each have felt the effects of low advertising dollars, smaller spending budgets and layoffs. Many laid-off journalists have decided to venture out on their own. They are working as freelance journalists, starting small production companies, or are maintaining blogs to keep their skills up to speed. Essentially, these journalists are operating as small businesses.

Election/Installation & Bylaws Update  

 

The Annual Election meeting of Miami-Dade County Council of PTAs/PTSAs will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2011 in the School Board Administration Building Auditorium.

All members are invited and encouraged  to take an active part in the election process. We need your assistance in getting as many members to attend as possible.   Please ensure each member has a current PTA/PTSA membership card for your unit.    

 

Due to the number of changes to the bylaws, we will be conducting a proposed amendment review session starting at 5:30 p.m. for any local unit members that may have questions.

How to file a tax extension,
no matter how disorganized you are

It's inevitable: You're fairly sure you're going to have all your tax documentation together, and then something goes awry. You don't receive all your tax forms, you've misplaced a receipt, or you're otherwise unable to file your return by the due date.

If you need more time to prepare your federal tax return, you'll need to file an extension.

Hampton
House to Become New Community Center and Museum

(MIAMI, April 8, 2009) – Longtime efforts to preserve the Historic Hampton House, a once popular gathering place for black musicians and celebrities, will get a boost on Thursday, April 9 when Miami-Dade unveils plans to restore the 1950s era two-story motel as part of a $4.7 million allocation from the County’s Building Better Communities General Obligation Bond (GOB) Program.
