On January 26th, 2012, the City of Miami Gardens will host the City of Miami Gardens 2012 Citizen’s Academy in the City Council Chambers, 1515 NW 167th Street. The 10-week educational program consists of interactive presentations by the various City departments and culminates into increased citizen awareness and involvement on boards, committees, and other community-wide initiatives. The graduates of the first class receive recognition for their time and participation on this new venture with a ceremony and reception.

Councilman Oliver Gilbert III established the Citizen’s Academy earlier this year as a way to familiarize citizens with the function and purpose of City government, and thereby making the City more transparent. Gilbert believes the participants will gain a better understanding of how each of the City departments supports the City’s overall mission, and the connection between local government and State and Federal Government. The course sessions range from the organization of the City, public safety, fiscal management, building permitting and code compliance and zoning: 

Session 1: Orientation - Mayor & City Council - City Organization

Session 2: Human Resources - Budget & Finance 

Session 3: Community & Economic Development - Planning & Zoning 

Session 4: Information Technology - Procurement 

Session 5: Public Works - Capital Projects - Fleet Management 

Session 6: Police (Tour) - Public Safety Communications 

Session 7: Parks & Recreation (Tour) - Events & Media 

Session 8: Code Compliance - Building Services 

Session 9: Legal & City Clerk 

Session 10: Graduation Ceremony 

The class will be open to 20 City residents, who must be at least 18 years of age or older.
