Jamaican Diaspora Launches Celebrations for Golden Jubilee Anniversary of Independence 

(Miami, FL    August 8, 2011)—City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, and Jamaica’s Consul General Sandra Grant Griffiths will host a ceremonial launch “Jamaica 50” to begin preparations for the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Jamaica’s anniversary of Independence.  The event will take place on Monday, August 8^th at Miami City Hall, 3500 Pan American Drive, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD 

Taste of the Neighborhood is a newly developed idea for Southwest Broward and anticipates exposing patrons to some of the area’s best restaurants. This inaugural promotion will run from Monday, August 15^th to Sunday, October 14^th.  The culinary event will provide diners the opportunity to savor incredible, specially priced three-course meals at a fixed price (Lunch $12-$15, Dinner $18-$25). Each restaurant will include an appetizer, entrée and dessert as part of the fixed price. The menus will be available to patrons Monday-Friday for lunch and Monday-Thursday for dinner.

Touring Series! 

South Florida – Miami Dade’s premier arts advocacy organization, Diaspora Arts Coalition is proud to announce their Annual Summer Arts Workshop Series.  The Master Arts Summer Workshop Touring Series gives youth throughout Miami Dade County the opportunity to learn the arts and the business of the arts first-hand from a professional, practicing artist who will travel to a neighborhood park or summer camp location and conduct a one hour, interactive performing arts workshop/demo.   Beginning Tuesday, July 5^th and continuing thru Friday, August 5th, 2011,   Workshops will take place at various parks/summer camps throughout Miami Dade County between the hours of 10:00 a.m. & 4:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.  The workshops will cover a variety of performing arts genres, including: Dance, Music, Poetry and Drama.   

                                             

Calder Casino & Race Course Donates $25,000 to the Red Cross

 Miami, FL  – Calder Casino & Race Course showed its continued partnership and support with the American Red Cross with a $25,000 donation in support of the Red Cross AmeriCorps program, whose members respond to local disasters and teach our community to prepare for and prevent disasters.

Vice Mayor Howard Berger's Annual Community Awareness Day Resource and Health air will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2011 @ 10:00am - 2:00pm at Veterans Park (7600 NW 50 St. Lauderhill.) This FREE annual event attracted over 400 attendees, in addition to the 60+ vendors/exhibitors from community organizations, volunteers, performers and staff. The City of Lauderhill and its community partners will offer a wide array of health, wellness, screenings, information, and activities.

Miramar Hosts Hoop-It-Up
 World Championships 

Hoop-It-Up World Championships, the popular 3-on-3 basketball tournament, will be played at the Miramar Town Center located at 2200 Civic Center Place on Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21.   

Team titles and cash prizes are up for grabs for all adult competitive divisions. 

Funds raised from the tournament will go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

District 1 interns to complete Commissioner Jordan’s Summer Youth Internship Initiative Program with ceremony at Don Shula Hotel

MIAMI, Fl – The 27 recruits that started Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan’s annual Summer Youth Internship Initiative (SYII) eight weeks ago will celebrate the program’s completion on Friday, August 12, 2011 at the Don Shula Hotel, 6842 Main Street, in Miami Lakes during a special luncheon. The luncheon, from 12 noon to 2 p.m., will include Commissioner Jordan, the student interns, and the business partners involved in the program.

One thousand children will receive backpacks and school supplies to start the new school year 

(Miami, FL   August 11, 2011)—The Little Haiti Neighborhood Enhancement Team (NET) Office and the Little Haiti Optimist Club will be celebrating on Friday, August 12, 2011, the 8^th Annual Back to School event, from 10am – 2pm, at Little Haiti Soccer Park, 6301 NE 2^nd Avenue with over 1,000 children who will be treated to a fun filled day.  Backpacks and school supplies will be given to the first 1,000 children, accompanied by an adult, first-come-first served.

Miami Landmark to be illuminated in

 Jamaican colors for Independence

In commemoration of Jamaica's 47^th anniversary of Independence, the Bank of America tower in downtown Miami will illuminate in the colors of the Jamaican flag - black, green and gold, this Friday (Aug. 7) at dusk.

The 47-floor Miami landmark, located at International Place, will remain lit throughout the weekend until midnight on Sunday (Aug. 9) as a tribute to the Jamaican Diaspora here in South Florida in celebration of the nation's Independence.  Every night as of Friday, through Sunday, the building will illuminate in the colours of the Jamaican flag.
