Commissioner Francis Suarez Initiates First Business and Networking Forum in District 4

-Local business owners in the City of Miami will have the opportunity to network and walk away with valuable information that will benefit their business growth –

(Miami, FL   October 12, 2010)—City of Miami Commissioner Francis Suarez will be hosting the first “Business and Network Forum” in District 4 for local business owners. The event will take place on Monday, October 18, 2010, at St. Michael’s Church School located at 2987 West Flagler Street, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This event is geared towards educating business owners in the City of Miami on economic initiatives to help promote their business and other available services. The forum will allow small business owners to network with each other and to get to know their neighbors.

A panel of City officials from the Neighborhood Enhancement Team (NET), the Miami Police Department, Access Miami, and Community Development will be on hand to discuss the various economic initiatives available and the process involved in acquiring proper assistance. In addition, non-profit organizations such as SCORE and the Calle Ocho Chamber of Commerce will be discussing resources available to small businesses.

Financial expert Orlando Montiel, President of PAZ ECONOMICA & IOXUS FINANCIAL, will help open the forum with remarks on how to differentiate your business from the competition, and how to properly market and promote a business.

“I hope this forum gives business owners the proper tools to grow and promote their business and in turn help the economy in our community,” commented Commissioner Francis Suarez on the much anticipated event.

Workshop Topic: Surviving the Recession

FREE TO DAC MEMBERS  |  $25 FOR NON-MEMBERS

R

eports and commentaries from economic experts indicate a rebound from the recession, however, Florida's unemployment rate has reached nearly 12 percent and local not-for-profit organizations in South Florida are still feeling the pinch of the flagging economy. The unprecedented home foreclosures, increasing unemployment rates, displacements caused by weather-related storms and cuts in government funding have strained the capacities for many nonprofits. "This is the worst fundraising environment I have worked in my 25-plus year career in fundraising for nonprofit organizations," said Jeff Towers of the American Red Cross.

In 2004, U.S. corporations donated an average of 1.5 percent of their pretax profits to charity, but that portion has since declined to 0.7 percent, said Mark Shamley of the Association of Corporate Contribution Professionals. "Our signals tell us that corporate giving as a whole is expected to remain flat or slightly decrease in the coming fiscal cycle," he said.

While non-profit organizations face more cut-backs from local, state and federal funds, community needs are growing exponentially. To survive, nonprofits must utilize every available resource at their disposal and devote more attention to analyzing environments and formulating creative strategies. Therefore nonprofits must continually scan the environment, develop flexible structures, innovative processes, and create new partnerships and working relationships to gain a competitive edge.

Today, more than ever, nonprofit boards, stakeholders, and staff must capitalize quickly on the changing business environment, improve overall profitability and make better strategic decisions as well as increase performance through improved effectiveness, efficiency and flexibility.

Surviving the Recession workshop will provide participants with some insights and resources to help sustain their non-profit organizations during difficult economic times.

I look forward to your participation.

Sincerely,

Desmond Alufohai, CMP
